Capital University Closing Residence Halls, Extending Remote Learning Through Semester

COLUMBUS, Ohio, March 16, 2020 — In continuing efforts to ensure the safety of its students and staff amid the COVID-19 pandemic, Capital University today announced it will close its traditional residence halls, with move-out processes completed by 5 p.m. Sunday, March 22. Additionally, the University will extend remote learning for all students through the end of the spring semester.

“While there are no confirmed cases of the virus on our campuses, it is integral to align with state and federal regulations to help slow the spread of COVID-19,” said Beth Paul, president of Capital University. “Our primary goal is to maintain the safety and well-being of our community, and also continue to support the learning goals and success of our students – as much as possible – while we all navigate these unprecedented waters.”

Because Capital is the primary residence for many students, the University is working with impacted students to provide housing consistency – utilizing University apartments and houses that allow for social distancing – for those who have need. Additionally, the University will be issuing prorated room and board credits for those impacted by residence hall closures.

These latest updates add to the University’s decision over the weekend to begin carry-out only services at its on-campus dining facilities, in accordance with Governor DeWine’s request that restaurants and bars adjust their onsite operations. Capital’s on-campus fitness centers have also ceased operation through at least April 6, at the guidance of Bexley’s mayor, Ben Kessler. The spring athletic season has also been canceled, in accordance with the Ohio Athletic Conference.
